The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - R - Review
Starring - Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, and Christopher Plummer
I know my body reviewed this but since I just watched this I figured why not review it again. Once again a movie that I waited to long to see before watching it. Not to get confused with the other versions that are out there this is the US version of the film. At least I think don’t quote me on that. Enjoyed this movie although few things bothered me.
The Good
I enjoyed the story so far. Was nice to see Daniel Craig in a non Bond roll and acting as a journalist and not the super spy. Rooney Mara played an interesting character who oddly very intriguing and well naked most of the film so take your pick as to what about her character was likable. The movie had a good flow except for a few parts, which Ill get to in a second. Overall not bad.
The Bad
It’s long… really long. Don’t get me wrong I’ve watched longer and I enjoyed it, but there was a few moments where I was like O ok thats the end.. No okay well maybe…. no well ok This is the end. That went on for quite some time towards the end of the film. Did I enjoy some of the scenes in the end? Yes. Did I feel that some of them were needed? No. For me this made the end of the movie drag on for me. Also ended on a bit of cliffhanger which is understandable being that it is the first within a trilogy but the second one isn’t until 2014 maybe. Just doesn’t feel as complete of a film and one that you have to watch the sequel to finish the first movie to move on. Well at least that’s what my feeling was at the end.
The Conclusion
Look hate to say it, but definitely more of a movie for guys the girls. Not that the story would be interesting to woman but prepare yourself for some nudity and some.. well.. just out there stuff. Although some chicks might dig her put a dude in his place. So maybe there might be some parts in there for girls to enjoy.. o and shirtless Daniel Craig. Anyways find this movie watch it. Would not play well at a party but I guess you could always try.

Thor - PG13 - Review
This was one that I just recently watched even though its been out for over the year. For some reason that I can’t remember I just never went out and saw this movie. Seeing as it looks like it came out right around when finals were I’m going to guess I was going to go and never had time and then forgot about it. That is until the Avengers came out and I decided that it might be one to watch. Having said that this was a lot better then I was expecting for whatever reasons my hopes weren’t exactly high on this one but it wasn’t bad.
The Good
Unlike Captain America this one felt like it was planned out and that the story was, although not written completely separate, it wasn’t rushed. It felt like more of an individual movie not one that needed to be rushed out before The Avengers comes out. Story although not majorly deep in detail was better then most super hero films. This movie for the most part is based in a place that doesn’t exist. The backgrounds and the cgi in this were very well done from what I saw at least.
The Bad
Although I said the story was better I still would of liked to have seen a little more character development of certain characters. Not that you can’t figure out there back story still would of liked just a little more.
The Conclusion
If you loved the Avengers and love comic book movies make put this on your list to watch it just hit Netflix so its out there in the world to see. If your in love with either Chris Hemsworth or Natalie Portman neither of which I’d blame you for. Go out and see this movie its a good weekend movie to watch when you can’t find anything else to watch.

Everything Must Go - R - Review
This was a movie that although it had Will Ferrell attached to it I feel it floated underneath every ones radar and I think there’s a reason for that. This wasn’t a normal film for Ferrell he went in a more serious direction and I don’t think it worked. Idea of the movie Ferrell plays an alcoholic who loses his job and then over the course of a week on his lawn and decides he needs to move on by the end of the movie.
The Good
Christopher Jordan Wallace who plays the role as the kid who kind of walks Ferrell through his trying to move on and in doing so did more for the movie then Ferrell did. The idea of the movie was different although I think they could of done the story more justice having said that.
The Bad
I know that Ferrell tried to play it serious but at the same time put in the comedy to give you the laughs and it just didn’t work. Also for someone that was an alcoholic he seemed to have it together more then most and I just couldn’t believe that his character was that bad off and that he had that many issues just didn’t come off that way. So I think this movie would of benefited one from some character development and well actually that’s it really.
The Conclusion
It’s an okay movie, not for all, even if your a fan of Will Ferrell. I think you’ll be disappointed by this movie because it isn’t his normal role. I’d give credit to him for trying to something different and for a lack of a better word independent. Although I don’t think it was a very good jump into that world and didn’t work out well for him.

The Lincoln Lawyer - R - Review
This movie was one of those one’s that surprised me a little bit. It was one that I had planned on seeing when it came out and just never got to it. It finally hit Netflix’s and I decided that I’d watch it and it wasn’t bad. I thoroughly enjoyed this one actually. Stars Matthew McConaughey as somewhat of a hot shot lawyer who’s a criminal defense lawyer. So not very liked by anyone always seen as putting criminals back on the street. The movie kind of focuses in on this time and his latest case where he gets more then he bargains for.
The Good
The story was pretty good. They did put a twist on the end but it wasn’t so much that it was annoying and it just didn’t fit but enough of one that you had that no way moment so that was good. Say what you want about Matthew McConaughey he played the role excellently. Although he kind of plays this somewhat hot shot lawyer and he seems on the side of the criminal you grow to like his character anyway and come to find that he’s an alright guy.
The Bad
There were moments where I wish they would of either not gone into the private life of his character or gone farther then they did. A bit more development on that end one of been nice to see but doesn’t take away to much from the film. Other then that not to much to complain about with this film
The Conclusion
If you like crime thrillers then you’ll thoroughly enjoy this movie. If you have no idea what you want to watch but want to watch something. This movie is a pretty safe bet.

A Dangerous Method - R - Review
This for me was a very enjoyable movie being a soon to be psych grad this movie for me was great. For those unaware the movie follows the time period around when Psychoanalysis was growing and the great minds of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud paths crossed for a brief time. The movie goes through that time period along with the relationship that Jung had with Sabina Spielrein who was a patient of his that later on would become one of the first women psychoanalysts. It’s interesting to see the dynamic between those three people. The movie had a great cast Keira Knightley who played Sabrina Spielrein, Michael Fassbender played Carl Jung, and Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud.
The Good
Partly because of a class I’ve been taking I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately on some of the history of psych and one of the areas we have gotten to is Sigmund Freud and this time period and from the film they did nail who these people were and what there attitudes were. So I can’t completely say for sure that what happened is truly what happened but what I will say is that they portrayed Freud and Jung very well and it truly one how those gentlemen were. The film was also very well filmed although I was caught up in the story it looked very well put together.
The Bad
Although I understood trying to establish that Keira Knightley’s character had some issues. There were moments where it felt over the top and just I don’t want to say uncomfortable but it just felt forced. Although not a big thing there were moments that it distracted from what was going on because as I said it just felt forced.
The Conclusion
If your into psych things then this might be one to check out. If your the type that likes to see Keira Knightley get a bit kinky then this one is for you. Other then that not that this is meant for a specific audience but unless you know who the people are and kind of are somewhat familiar with the terms then it may not be interesting to you.

Take Shelter - R - Review
This movie was an interesting one little predictable at times but overall it was an okay movie. It deals with a gentlemen who believes he might be coming down with the same thing his mother has so he starts to have some rather weird behaviors and like the title suggests he builds himself a shelter because of some of the things that he was seeing. The lead in this film is Michael Shannon who does an alright job and did well within the role he was given other then that not to excited about this film.
The Good
It was different to some extent so that was and wasn’t a half bad movie that is until like the last 10 minutes of the movie which I’ll get into in just a bit. Whoever did the special effects on the movie didn’t do that bad a job and the action in this movie wasn’t that bad either.
The Bad
The last 10 minutes or so of this movie really kind of just had no point and really just screwed with the movie and not really in a clever way really. They tried to give you that twist at that end that kind of messes with your head and gets you going on my I didn’t think of it that way. This one just seemed pointless and the film already felt like it had ended and then someone decided to tack on this idea that he wasn’t the only one seeing these things and that in the end he was right. Really didn’t get that feeling and the ending felt more like an insult than a clever ending. The ending of this movie was really like one of those people that want to try to out smart you in the end by doing something pointless and really not that clever and the only one who saw it that way was the person who did it. That’s this movie.
The Conclusion
Um I can’t really tell you who I’d suggest this to maybe people like me that are psych people and we dig movies that have weird endings with someone who’s messed up. But even then there are other movies out there that are a lot better then this one. Not to mention this movie is a tough one to explain to people without going on and ruining the film. As you can tell you really only know that some dude is screwed up and I hated the ending which pretty much sums up this movie.

Detachment - NR - Review
I found out about this movie looking through other reviews actually and decided that I’d take a look. Good thing I did, excellent movie. Haven’t seen a movie like it in a while or at all and it was a nice change and one that seemed to draw me into it. The film is about a long term substitute teacher that comes in for longer extensions then usual and on his last one he encounters some students and teachers that would change his life. The cast was amazing, for a movie that is a very independent film, nothing wrong with that though.  Speaking of that cast, Christina Hendricks, Adrien Brody, Lucy Liu, William Petersen, and Marcia Gay Harden just to name a few.
The Good
The way this movie was filmed was interesting. It was kind of filmed in a documentary real life kind of style. With interviews with the teacher played by Adrien Brody. Story was good played around with the issues of modern education and everything that’s going on so that was interesting to see. Also interesting how they played with his personal life clashing with his professional career and how all he wanted to do was help and it seemed to so nothing but come back to haunt him in the end.
The Bad
I mentioned that awesome cast. The problem with that awesome cast is I’m not sure whether some of them really belonged in the role or whether the role was a real fit for them. The one role that stood out like this was Lucy Liu’s character I’m just not sure if she was right for her role just didn’t do much for me.
The Conclusion
This is one to seek out and watch. There is a reason it’s not rated. The movie deals with suicide and prostitution among other things. So not exactly for everyone but if your looking for a nice independently feeling kind of drama. This one is for you.

These Amazing Shadows - Unrated - Review
I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. This films talks about the history of the National Film Registry which every year picks out a group of films that the library of congress deems important enough for them to go on the registry. Now you may be thinking there all old black and white historical films or anytime you think of Library of Congress we all get this idea in our heads of what they’d pick. Well your wrong just a few on this list include the Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Godfather, Blazing Saddles, there are even home videos on this list. Some commercials so its a very diverse list and I think this is what makes this film interesting just to see what is on the list. This group is also in charge of restoring these films trying to find original copies of these films and repairing them and restoring them to there original glory and its amazing to see the process they go through. Believe me if I had the chance to go into the vaults of film they had or just to be able to go in to see what they were working on that day it’d be amazing.
The Good
Excellent amounts of information. This is a film that I could probably watch again and not only that it gets you intrigued enough to look into the films that are on the list. Also the interviews they got there’s people on there that we all know some are from the Hollywood our generation knows others from Hollywood a generation back so you get a wide array of opinions on the movies.
The Bad
Can’t think of much of anything. Maybe it wasn’t long enough in my opinion.
The Conclusion
If you love film, if your a fan of film, if you like film at all do yourself a favor and watch this documentary. If your like me and you have nothing else to do in your spare time but to watch and review film. Watch this movie. It’s excellent view at some of the history of film and some of the ways that there has been an involvement from the Library of Congress to protect some of these films. Hugo - PG - Review
This was surprisingly a good movie. I didn’t want to think it was because of the amount of hype around it but it was alright not great but alright. This was a Martin Scorsese directed film. This was another reason to pause because although media loves him. His movies are sometimes overly hyped and not so good. This one however was different. This film is more about film appreciation then much of anything else.
The Good
The film its self looked amazing who ever was in the CG department for this movie did an excellent job. The movie was partially based off of a book so the story was actually a good story and an interesting one at that. Not one I’ve really seen either so that was a nice change. The movie started strong and ended strong so surprisingly although it may not be everyone’s cup of tea it was still a very well put together film. Ben Kingsley does an excellent job in his role within this film.
The Bad
Whoever did the marketing for this did a terrible job. I made the mistake of watching the commercials and immediately thinking kids movie and yes although it sort of is it really isn’t that at all. They also showed the kid hanging off the clock in every piece of advertising they put out and that didn’t really tell you much of anything either. Overall they didn’t give you a great idea what the film was about and I truly think they wasted money on marketing that didn’t work.
The Conclusion
It’s an alright movie if your looking for a good movie to sit down and watch then this is one for you. Looking for that safe date night film this one could work for you. There are some heavy parts in it but not that heavy so. Well how should I say this they tried to have heavy parts and they weren’t truly that heavy. But overall this film is a solid at least see it once.

The Rum Diary - R - Review
As you can see from the movie poster from up above this is a Johnny Depp movie. Personally that was about the only reason that I really looked into this film. Its a screenplay loosely based off of a Hunter S. Thompson novel. So interesting story based on that fact alone. For the movie its self it was okay I guess I took sometime and watched this about a week ago to see whether my thoughts would change on it or not and it really hasn’t really. The movie is based on a newspaper writer who moves down to Puerto Rico to write for the local paper down there and has to deal with the politics of the paper versus the politics of the locals.
The Good
Some of the characters within this movie were excellent. Give that credit to the actors and the writer. Story was pretty good a little tough to follow at times but overall it wasn’t that bad. The comedy within this movie is actually there so many of the movies I’ve watched lately that claim to be comedies its just not there for this one it is there. Now don’t get me wrong its not the rolling on the floor laughing movie but it does have those moments here and there.
The Bad
Lately I’ve been basing movies on whether there’s re-watch-ability to it. Which is why I generally don’t rate movies right after I watch them. This movie sadly doesn’t have that factor. I watched it once and since then I haven’t really felt the urge to watch it again nor have I really thought about it to much. It isn’t a bad movie but it also wasn’t that stand out movie either. It was kind of just there. Also for a Johnny Depp movie I kind of expected more what that more is I have no idea but I just expected something.
The Conclusion
This movie isn’t for everyone if your at all into Johnny Depp its worth the watch. Now I’m not completely familiar with Hunter S. Thompson’s work but the screenplay was loosely based on a novel of his at least according to IMDB so if you enjoy his work look into also other then that this is just an okay movie.

The Artist - PG13 - Review
This film is currently up for 10 Oscars including best picture. So far out of all the films I viewed on the list for best picture this year. I’m not sure if this movie belongs. It does it some categories. Cinematography and Music written for this movie it belongs in those categories not necessarily in the best motion picture category. Not for those not familiar this is a modern day silent movie and I have a feeling that for that reason alone that this movie got a lot of the recognition it did.
The Good
Now having said that I did somewhat like this movie to a point. The only problem is it took me until after the one hour point of this movie to actually start liking the movie and by that time the movie was over. The cinematography, music score, and the fashion design in this movie was excellent and whoever put those together does deserve the nomination for the film. This movie although I don’t think I would do it anytime soon I would sit down and watch it again. Maybe.
The Bad
Although I said I did eventually enjoy this movie the problem was that it took me over an hour to get to a point where I started to enjoy the movie. The other issue I have and this could be just me but I do other things while I watch movies for reviews I listen more than anything I do watch them but not as closely as I listen. The problem with this movie is I can’t do that with this movie I have to be glued to movie whether I want to or not. So its a movie that needs your undivided attention and in this world I just don’t know how many people could even if it was in a theater.
The Conclusion
If you like silent movies well then give this movie a shot. Although be warned your going to need about an hour and 40 minutes of uninterrupted time. It is a movie that you can watch in pieces but why would you. So not one for all people and still not seeing the best picture nomination for this film.

Moneyball - PG13 - Review
This film is currently up for 6 Oscars including best picture of the year. Which after watching the film I can see. The film stars Brad Pitt portraying Billy Beane who is the General Manager for the Oakland A’s and Jonah Hill who played Peter Brand sort of the brains behind Moneyball. The movie was based off of a book and was adapted for film. So most of this movie is based off of real life. It shows the start of what would be known as Moneyball in professional baseball. Interesting film kind of takes you through one season of the Oakland A’s where they first tried out using this strategy and Billy Beane’s past and how he came to be the GM for the Oakland A’s.
The Good
This film unlike most where you can only really get one watch out of it before you want to watch it again. Out of the Oscar best picture nominee’s that I’ve watched so far this is the only one that I’ve actually wanted to go back and watch again. I can’t tell you what it is exactly about the film that makes me want to watch it again but I do. Another good thing to note is that it’s a sports movie and most of the time the movie ends with the team winning the championship or whatever. This movie didn’t partly because it was based on real life. This was a definite nice change to a sports movie it did and it didn’t end well for the team and it was nice to have that.
The Bad
The beginning was a little frustrating for me. They start showing you two different stories. One in flashback form and the other in regular fashion. The problem is you spend almost the first 20 minutes of the film trying to figure out who’s who and why there showing this. Later on you realize why they showed it and they used it to show you where he was and how he got there. Little bit more detail would of been nice. They kept moving forward through the season but I at least never felt that they were moving forward in the movie so a better way to represent that games were being played and they were moving through the season. Although they did do it well in some spots.
The Conclusion
Although I did complain about some of the things in this film. Doesn’t deter me away from telling you that this is an excellent watch and as I said it has that re-watch ability factor. If you love baseball or sports movies at all go out and see this film. This is a definite guys movie there is a little family twist in there but not exactly a chick flick. So do yourself a favor and go out and see this film.

The Descendants - R - Review
This is another film off the list of Oscar Nominee’s for best picture. After watching I was originally hesitant to believe all the hype from critics over this film and whether it was as good as they say. Well after watching this film and sleeping on it. It may be all the hype that’s been placed around the film. The film is basically about a couple with kids who they’ve grown some what a part and she ends up in an coma about to die and he has to take over as the primary parent. Not only that but he has to deal with a land deal with his cousins and deal with a hidden past from his wife. With a bit of children screw up on the side. George Clooney plays the father and as you can see he played a major part in the film and what they anchored the movie on and it worked.
The Good
Well put together. I especially enjoyed the narration by Clooney which really helped out the film and moved it along nicely. Most of the characters in this film also felt needed and none of the movie felt as if it was not needed or just thrown in there to fill time. Everything felt like it was needed. I think they captured well some of the problems that he was going through and even some of the internal conflicts.
The Bad
I’m not sure how much I would tell people this is a comedy. They sort of marketed it as a comedy drama but really its more drama then it is comedy. It wasn’t enough to take away from the film because the film was excellent and stood well on its own with out needing the heavy comedy within it.
The Conclusion
If your looking for an excellent movie watch this film. Bit of warning though the film was a little heavy in parts. I mean you are dealing with death, divorce, and greed so all the fun stuff that makes a movie turn into a rather heavy movie. So do your self a favor and go out and see this film.

Midnight in Paris - PG13 - Review
This was an interesting movie and all I have to really say is that it’s a Woody Allen movie and most of you won’t question that statement. This movie stars Owen Wilson being Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams. Story begins with Wilson a struggling writer with his fiance in Paris, no surprise there. Wilson plays an socially awkward person constantly explaining that he would be better off if had grown up in Paris when in the 20’s the golden era. So after an evening of wine tasting he finds himself out and lost in Paris. The clock strikes midnight and all of a sudden he finds himself in 1920’s Paris hanging with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Picasso. Through these nightly adventures he gets his book back on track and finds out what he truly wants.
The Good
The story was excellent. This movie wasn’t one of those movies that used every other tool in the film manual to create a good movie. Just a really well done story. Now I know some find Wilson’s acting to be well annoying but for this movie it worked. I can’t say how much I enjoyed the Nostalgia theme they went with through the movie and the going back and forth between the two era’s of time. They did it nicely to it wasn’t obvious what was going on and they did it really suddenly and didn’t make a fanfare over the time switch. They also didn’t complicate the story with the issues of going  back and forth and people getting stuck or anything like that which some films get stuck on which was a nice change.
The Bad
I know the opening sequence of this movie bugged me. Now I know the random shots of Paris and that sort of beginning is Allen’s thing but whether they were doing on purpose or not all I could think was please steady the camera. You watch the opening sequence and you can tell the camera is rocking back and forth which just kind of gets irritating because its just small enough to annoy. Other then the camera work in the beginning, which only lasted for the first 5 min or so, the film was well done. And as I said I think they filmed it that way to set the feeling of the film which worked but steady the camera.
The Conclusion
Go see this film if you like comedy or romance or even fantasy. Take the time and see this either rent it or find it some where else. This is nominated for 2012 Oscar for best picture and usually I question there judgement but for this one I get it so. Do yourself a favor and try to see this film

Limitless - PG13 - Review
This was yet another one of those movies that I’ve always meant to see and just never got to it or just completely forgot about it. That is until it hit Netflix. I saw it on there and I added it to my queue with the idea that I’d watch it. Still didn’t happen for sometime. This was probably for 2 reasons one just haven’t had time two this is one of those movies that after watching the commercial you didn’t know whether this was going to be really good or just really bad. Turns out that this movie was actually really good. The movie stars Bradley Cooper as a down and out writer trying to get his book of the ground. Runs into an old friend from the pass gives him this new synthetic drug and all of a sudden the world is open to him. Few other familiar faces in this film, Robert De Niro who plays a very De Niro role in this and Abbie Cornish who plays the on again off again girlfriend.
The Good
For once this story line felt fresh although there have been plenty of movies out there like this. This one at least felt fresh. The movie kept moving there didn’t feel as if there was any down time in this film so there was that slow point in the movie. All though it wasn’t so fast that you felt like you needed to catch your breath to catch up with what was going on. The camera work in this film was nice to there was hardly if any cg in this movie and anytime they wanted to give you the idea of something they used camera movement instead of cg and I could appreciate that with the amount of cg in films lately. The other part I loved about this film and what kind of sold this movie for me was the ending. So often we see that the person who’s on the drugs ends up dead or in jail. This time the guy on drugs succeeds and gets off of it and actually gets something from them and screwing over one of the other characters in the process. This ending sold this movie for me it was nice to see the movie end that way rather then what you always see.
The Bad
There’s one seen where it was a little out there and all’s I have to say is blood drinking. It happened and it was a little weird but give the writers credit I didn’t see that coming until it happened. There was a few parts where you might of wanted a little more detail but other then that it wasn’t really needed to get through the movie so can’t really complain to much about that.
The Conclusion
If your looking for that action flick where you don’t have to put to much thought into it then watch this film. It doesn’t require you to be really heavily involved to know whats going on. Not one I’d necessarily go out and buy but one that is at least worth the rent to watch then decide.
